Stargate SG-1 fic, The Parting Glass, Gen

This is totally unbeta'd and rough around the edges, but I saw just saw the redial_the_gate post on The First Ones, and couldn't resist the lemminglike urge to post my episode tag, which has languished on my hard drive, lo these many years. Fair warning, I'm quite likely to revise it when I get a round tuit.

Now you have a round tuit.

I read this once before, during this episode in Redial, and I just did so again after Fig's rec. Considering how many deaths there are in Stargate, it always strikes me that the only ones people made a really big deal of (in the show) were one of Daniel's fake deaths and Janet. This was simply a lovely tribute to Daniel, to Jack, to SG-1, to Rothman, and to everyone else. And after reading or trying to read many "First Ones" tags, this definitely deals with Daniel's reactions (and everyone else's) in what seems the most realistic way.

(just as a side note, I may be wrong, but I think it was Griff, not Coburn, who got shot in the ep)

Yep, you're right, it was Griff (I always get those two mixed up, and it's worse when they're both in the episode.) I just corrected it. Thanks!

And you've nailed it- I really wanted in this piece to bring out just how many deaths there have been, and show the characters coping- a bit of closure for the episode.

That having been said, I'm a little too squeamish to go for uber-realism, especially given that people living with the conditions in the SGC would probably have to go a little crazy to cope. My SG-1 are a bit larger than life, stronger and more resilient than Real People- but they still grieve for the ones who don't come home.

I get what you mean with the realism. I didn't understand until I tried writing my own fic how traumatizing a job like the SGC must be. You do a great job balancing that anyway, though :)
