W is for Washington, GEN, Jack Alpha-bits Entry

Oct 28, 2008 10:11

Doh! My entry for the Gen-Fic Jack Alpha-bits ficathon. Late because I'm an idiot and forgot I signed up. Sorry, Fig. The other ficathon entries can be found here
------------------------------------------------

W is for Washington

Jack wondered how much time he was going to spend wishing he could solve problems with his P-90 instead of with a memo. *All of it.* )

He could do this, really he could. But it would be so much easier if a Trust agent would pop out from behind a bush and try to shoot him.

Hee! That sums up Jack in a nutshell, right there!

This is great, Redbyrd - delightfully in character, wonderful scene-setting, and your usual excellent OC to round things out. Well worth the wait - and you're not the last one, so don't worry about it. :)

I'm glad I'm not last. But even so- I've been thinking off and on about doing a Jack in Washington fic, and not remembering why. Duh. At least my subconscious seems to have figured out what I wanted to say while the rest of me was lost in space.

Excellent! I love all the little details you put in here--Jack requesting a place with two bedrooms (team visits!), the unfamiliarity of DC streets being as tough as offworld without his team, the goofy bets...I could go on but I think I'd list the whole fic. Great Jack voice, over all.

Thank you! It was fun to do. I'm glad I managed to squeak it in, even late.

Worth waiting for! I love all the side bets -- and Landry was so green to bet on Daniel not getting into trouble. Wonderful. This has a great flow, a quite pace, but not too slow. All good.

Jack kept begging me to have Trust agents leap out of the bushes, but I, the cruel writer, sent him to face his paperwork instead. (I'm so mean.)

LOL....and if there's Trust agents leaping about, well, then, he'd have to have a gun. So, yeah, total excuse just to get a weapon in his hands.

And shooting paperwork--just never as satisfying.

NEW REDBYRD FIC! Hee! Poor Jack. Fish out of water in D.C. You really made the details sing with the danish and the apartment.

I especially liked Wilson and Jack getting into battle mode as soon as he caught the unspoken part about the 302s.

It's funny, but I was thinking of all the recent discussions on 100 Days when I wrote this. Jack may hate being stranded, but he's accepted it, and that means he's going to adapt. Now, his form of adapting may well mean driving the people around him nuts. But, hey, SG-1 has *always* driven people nuts. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

And Jack really has to believe in what he's doing. If he didn't, he'd turn down the promotion and retire, and after all he's done, who could blame him? But he's not doing that, because he's still covering his teams' collective six- all his teams.

All his teams. Yep! Which is what made Wilson so special. And how he was commenting on Cam and his pov (which we all know, Cam did feel the loss too--just not the same way as Jack would). And...there's just all these wonderful little nuggets in this story.

heh. I love when redial ends up being inspiration. :-D

Oh, it *totally* is. I go back and reread some of the discussions when I'm writing something related.

What a good read! Jack is always Jack, even his surroundings change.

Heh, no, he really doesn't change that much. Someday I need to write a Homeworld Security staff meeting. *g*
