But you *must* give in to expectations. It's the Done Thing!

Heh, in the very unlikely case of me finding someone I want to marry, my mother's preference is for elopement.

She says that now....

We had the reverse case. We expected my sister to want to get married in jeans on a windy beach (perhaps even with bombs whisting above) - she had to fight for the traditional wedding as we didn't believe she meant it. She was surprised that's what she wanted...but our expectations of her made it all a bit harder, unfortunately.

Which shows that it is about expectations and not desires! I plan to stand up for what I want (and already have had to a few times), but it requires thought!

My advice would be to stick to your guns on the things that really do matter to you, whatever they are and to give in to (I would guess in your case as well as mine) relatives' expectations/desires on the things that aren't so close to your heart. Easier said than done I know and I certainly didn't succeed on all accounts but hey, we had a great day and a lovely wedding - at least we thought so and that is really what matters. : )
