Yeah, I agree. Though I think even with alcohol, parties do much better with some kind of theme or shared activity. Also, without something other than the alcohol, parties can become somewhat inhospitable for anyone not drinking.
Yeah. Some people say they are better at socialising when a little drunk. I think most folk who have been at a party sober will tell you that the drinkers are no more adept at socialising, but the other drinkers are far more forgiving.
I have in the past had daytime things, notably to celebrate my grandma's birthday the year she died I had a tea and scone thing. Daytime is easier to do without alcohol.
Although I'm a lot more sensitive that I used to be because when I'm sober I hate going near pubs after 10pm on a weekend. I'm just not in the same loud swaying mood as the rest of the pub.
I find that parties with boardgames have generally been the most successful because they lend themselves to a good amount of interaction and camaraderie. Drinks are usually provided, but they aren't the focus. People are too busy playing rather than bored and drinking.
