Not bad, but I definitely would suggest changing the left nav so that the current page doesn't disappear from the navigation when you go to it. It breaks one of the major rules of web usability to have a menu which is changing on every page.

All the online user guides I've seen/read tell me to take away the link to the page you're already on as it's pointless. They state 'why would you need a link to a page you are already on'. It saves on bandwidth and it also keeps a constant format between the number of links on a page.

You're probably misinterpreting what you're being told there. Whilst you can take away the link, although that's very rarely done these days anyway as it helps search bots find pages, that would just mean remove the clickable part of it, but not take away the element completely as all the other links should stay in the same place at all times.

Standard browsing behaviour is that a user goes through the links in a navigation menu from either left to right or top to bottom. If they have to suddenly jump back up one, or across one because the other items moved, it throws them and they end up missing a page usually. Try going through the pages on the site in order one by one and you'll see. :)

Still, it's up to you. This is just some advice from someone who actually builds sites as his job rather than an online guide. :P
