Discipline? LOL

Sorry, there's no such thing in the US. Parents think teachers/librarians/everyone/anyone else should be disciplining their kids -- except them. It should be the parents. Kids shouldn't have to rely on school to teach discipline -- school should be for learning, but, at least in the US, that's not how it works. My mother used to teach 5th grade and found the best way to get kids to listen/etc (aside from those with severe learning disabilities) was to show them you respect them and treat them, basically, as adults. Not to talk down to the or at them, and for the most part it worked. This is not how the rest of the teaching world feels, and therefore no one's doing any disciplining.

I suppose you could also blame it on the media/movies/tv/video games. But the real problem are parents. I feel like most don't give a fuck anymore. I seen it every day at my job(s). Kids run wild, run barefoot, scream and shout, pull stuff off shelves. Yes, this is fine at home, but you're in the store/library/etc and it is NOT ( ... )

I am really bitter too and that is why I am really curious as to how other countries discipline. My mom is a 1st grade teacher and so I hear a lot from her as well as from other family members/friends that are teachers. It kills me how obnoxious the parents are. In one situation a teacher and the teacher aid reported a kid misbehaving and the mom came in and said my kid said he didn't do that. So the teacher informed the mom that she and the aid had both witnessed it and the mom yelled at them and said her kid doesn;'t act that way and she doens't believe them. Ridiculous...

Yea..I don't really agree on the media/movies/tv/video games being the main cause of issues. My brothers and I were raised with great violent movies like Robocop, Rambo, every Arnold movie. We loved violent video games. But of course if a kid is raised in a violent household and violent tv/games of coures they are goign to think tis a norm...

Something seriously needs to be done and I hope it happens asap!

My mom had that problem when she taught first grade, too. The worst was when she had a student who kept acting like a dog and the students mother was a teacher -- and encouraged the girl to keep acting like a dog! Ridiculous.

Me either. There are other, more important, issues. Like, you know, paying attention to your kids, which parents don't seem to do as much anymore. My sister and read a lot of science fiction, world war ii/holocaust books when we were growing up and we turned out fine ... I think the key is violent household -- it's not the video game it's the way you treat your kids D:

I hope it happens, too. I just don't think it will.

Ridiculous. Why is the teacher union not doing anything about this crap? I will NEVER be a teacher. I use to think it was a career I was interested in!

I'm in Texas. I have always been taught to respect my elders, say "yes, ma'am" and "no, ma'am". I'm teaching my nephew to do the same and I will succeed if it kills me. I think it's really about the parent. Some parents don't give a crap if their child is a horrible despicable disgusting person. I care. When my nephew says something mean, even if it's to someone his age or younger, I immediately step in and handle it. I don't care how many other kids have parents who don't care if their child calls others names or is hateful, I will not allow my nephew to grow up being the same. People deserve respect, even if you don't like them. That poor woman on the bus makes me so angry. If it was my child and I found out about it there would be a very swift and very strict punishment ( ... )
