Hey everyone!
Have you ever stopped to think about how the times are changing for home schoolers?
These days home schoolers are known as these super smart genius kids or something. For example, I had this home school friend who went to college and whenever he got a “B” in a class, the rest of the people in that class were all like “Oh no! We’re DOOMED!”
But back when I was home schooled...
We were just considered plain old “strange” if they even considered us at all because we hadn’t had a chance to prove our stuff yet. People were like: “You’re a home schooler? What does that mean? Do you have a teacher who comes to your house? Is your mom a teacher? What about socialization? Is that legal? What’s 15 times 8?” ...It was terrible!
Actually, in all honesty it was kind of funny too because in order to cope with the quizzing we used to get from people who wanted to make sure we were getting a good education, my siblings and I would just spout out random facts at random times. That way we could prove how smart we were without being subjected to a set of questions we might not have been able to answer!
We’d say things like, “Did you know that whales are the largest mammals?” “I learned yesterday that the Earth has a magnetic field that protects it from the Sun’s harmful rays!” “The capital of New Jersey is Trenton!” …You know, goofy stuff like that. And it worked pretty well even though it made us look like a bunch of know-it-alls.
Yeah, it's amazing to me how these days home schooler trot around and get all kinds of fanfare. Everybody seems to know what home schooling is and is in some way related to a home school family. But do I ever get a thank you for all the flack I took for all those years? Nope, no way! Sorry Josh! So much for years of spouting random facts to pave the way for future generations, eh? People have such short memories, don’t they?
Anyway, besides the academic fanfare, it’s almost like people are scared of home schoolers too. Maybe it’s because we tend to shut down the government’s phone system whenever they try to do things we don’t like? Maybe it’s because for the most part we like to live out in the wilderness with a stockpile of guns and stuff? Maybe it’s because all these years of getting asked questions like, “You’re a home schooler? What does that mean? Do you have a teacher who comes to your house? Is your mom a teacher? What about socialization? Is that legal? What’s 15 times 8?” made us just a tad bit mean…
Well, whether people love us or hate us, you just gotta love the respect we get, right?
