[Riley is drunk.

Really drunk.

In the El Mojito bar, she sits, making a fort out of shot glasses. It's unsurprising that after a time, having sat alone for a while, she finds the need to talk to someone. Rather than call someone specifically, she turns her comm on and addresses the boat at large.]So... I don't know about the rest of you but I ( Read more... )

[Riley's frown doesn't leave her face, but it lightens fractionally and she nods in acknowledgment.]

Well when you put it like that...

[She's back to where she started, more or less.

She had agreed to exclusivity with Gunn a couple weeks ago, sure. It had been when things hadn't been quite so serious between them. Before the party. Before he lost his eye. Before they started keeping more constant, close quarters with each other and...were getting closer to each other. At least, it feels like they're closer.

Asking people how they made it work when they actually wanted it to work, not just see if it could...Riley wasn't any clearer on the matter.]

Guess I'll just have to take things as they come and figure it out along the way.

Thanks. Going to need it I think.

[After all, she's pretty sure she's going to fuck something up along the way. It seems inevitable.

With a sigh, she leans back a bit and stretches her arms over her head, then leans her elbows back on the counter.]

So. Distract me. Tell me somethin' about yourself that I don't already know.

[Wow.

Riley stares at McCoy with wide eyes. He had been married once. A divorce. A child left behind. Before Halloween this would have just been unfortunate, knowing that his child was elsewhere.

Now that they'd learned all of their worlds had been destroyed and everyone they knew was gone...]

...

I'm so sorry.

[Riley doesn't begrudge him telling her. That's what drinking buddies were for, right?

Still, she doesn't pat his shoulder or arm, or offer to hug him. McCoy doesn't seem the type that would welcome that sort of comfort, and she wasn't the sort to offer it to many people anyway.

Instead, she refilled a shot glass for him.]

Not particularly. Was never close to my family, and never had any long-term friends.

[She shrugs.]

I miss my work sometimes but that's really it. Got enough here to keep me busy...

[Riley almost asks what a Vulcan is, but he asks a question first so she choose to reply to that first.]

I worked for a company called ACE Corp. They specialized in developing various kinds of cybernetic prosthetic limbs and enhancements. I spent a couple years testing devices for them at various stages of their development...and finally they let me have some implanted for testing.

[She grins. It's clear she's proud of this, after all, she was trusted with millions of dollars of advanced technology after only a few short years of working as a human guinea pig.]

I've had my hearing enhanced in addition to having devices implanted on my larynx, lungs, and diaphragm.

[Riley draws her hair back from her neck and points to the thinnest of silvery scars on her throat.]

See?

[She nods.]

Well, the stuff in my ears lets me hear softer sounds, noises at pitches beyond normal human hearing, things at further distances...when it's turned on anyway. If it was on all the time I'd drive myself crazy I'm sure.

With that and the device attached to my larynx I can actually kinda...echo-locate? It took a while to learn how to interpret the responses from the devices but I've gotten the hang of it since then...

The larynx piece lets me more hit some pretty interesting pitches which is cool. Gave me the ability for better precision with tones and such, different kinds of sounds. I was hoping they'd figure out how to let me make two different tones at first but they hadn't gotten that far...

[She pauses and looks at McCoy with a grin.]

With me so far or should I stop?

Well.

Anyway, so then with the precision of the larynx, combined with what they did with my lungs and diaphragm, I have a lot more power to the sounds I can produce? They can be louder, more piercing... Cracking glass was pretty easy but...with time they said I could probably manage harder things.

[She grins.]

Unfortunately that...doesn't seem to be working the way it usually does. I tried it once and it's like I was never had that kinda power in the first place. I think Redd did something...I don't know.

All I've got is the hearing, the echolocation...precision without power.

It's pretty damn cool though.
