The Spark That Guides You Homeenigmatic_blue | PG-13 | Spoilers: through season 7 |
Getting out of Purgatory is only the beginning. (Dean’s time in Purgatory changes him in ways Sam can’t understand, and leaves Castiel with only a shadow of his power. Dean and Cas need each other if they aren’t going to fall apart, and Sam somehow has to hold them all together.)
This story took my breath away. The need and love between Dean and Cas is palpable, and the mystery of what happened between them in Purgatory was fascinating to watch unfold. Cas broke my heart with his confusion and sadness a thousand times over, all while my heart was aching for Dean. This is how I have always seen Dean and Cas, so tangled within each other that they go beyond just needing and loving each other.

Thirteen months ago, Castiel got a call that shattered his world. It was a police officer informing him that his family, his beloved husband and child, had been caught in a tragic car accident. They were hit by a drunk driver. Neither of them made it through the night, dying in the hospital from blood loss during surgery.
Thirteen months later, it still feels like it happened yesterday. He's existing in darkness, only going through the basic motions of eat, sleep, and work, curling further and further into himself and turning into less and less of a human as the days pass. He isn't ready to move on, not at all, but with the help of friends he didn't know he had and when a man named Dean Winchester stubbornly elbows his way into Castiel's life, he finds things changing whether he wants them to or not.
This story packed such an emotional wallop for me. Castiel's grief feels so real and raw that it brought back memories of grief I've felt over my own losses in life. The writer does an incredible job painting the feelings of numbness and overwhelming, all-encompassing sadness. Yet, the story does have hope, and Cas's rediscovery of how to live and find joy in life with the help of Dean is so very sweet. I especially love the friendship between Cas and Sam, as well.
The Long, Dark Night of the Soultiptoe39 | PG-13 | Spoilers: through season 7 | Warnings: Language, some sexual innuendo, violence, blood & guts & some very scary/gory monsters | drama, romance
Finding their way through purgatory means Dean and Castiel must face monsters and an endless landscape of darkness, but it also means they must navigate the wilds of their own troubled souls. Meanwhile, Sam seeks out an ally in his quest to bring his brother home and finds he has his own unpleasant truths to face.
I think this is one of my favorite Purgatory fics that I've read, so far. I love the idea of Purgatory being the place where Dean and Cas have to work through their own personal demons and make peace with themselves to help find their way home. And any story that has awesome Sam/Jody in it is a definite plus, for me.
