The Hoovers, a quirky Arizona family, pile into their falling-apart VW van to go on a road trip to Los Angeles so the little daughter, Olive (Abigail Breslin), can take part in the "Little Miss Sunshine" beauty pageant for pre-teen females. Along the way to California, the Hoovers discover death, color blindness, the pleasures of chocolate ice cream, and a highway cop who enjoys straight (but not gay) porn.
