I can has gold stars!

I haven't been this excited about gold stars since I was six. And probably not even then, as I was a precocious little thing, and a know-it-all to boot; I kind of accepted gold stars as my due and the natural order of things. I don't recall if I mentioned a few weeks ago that I had gotten 100% on Wave of Mutilation on Expert vocals. This was very ( Read more... )

The five stars next to the song title are gold, and quite impossible to miss. You need 150% of the points necessary for five stars (on Still Alive, it takes 120K to get five stars, and so I felt like the music gods were having a great deal of fun at my expense when I got 179,044), and it is possible to get 100% on a song without getting the gold stars. It is also possible to get gold stars without getting 100% on the song: I still haven't managed to get 100% on More than a Feeling or Still Alive, but good use of overdrive pushed me up to enough points.

No, the five white stars become five gold stars when you hit 150% of the points necessary to get five stars. So, on Still Alive, you need 120,000 points to get five stars. When you hit 180,000 points, it make the getting-another-star ding, and your five white stars turn gold. The thing that most often screws me on overdrive usage is accidentally kicking it at the end of a long note, just as I'm going into a set of tambourine bits. Whenever possible, I try to kick it when it's 3/4 full, just before the next charged line. Roam is a hard one for maximizing overdrive, because it has a lot of lines that bleed into each other, with no space to kick it. I think the solution for that one is to kick it if you can at the end of each tambourine section.
