I would like to preface this by stating that I am not a bah-humbugging Scrooge. I love excuses for presents, both giving and receiving ( Read more... )

I hear ya. We've got one family on board with our "homemade and preferably consumable" gift requests. I'm making vanilla and flavored sugars, and cocoa mix. My brother is making bread. My dad's a wood worker. I'm having a lot of fun with it...something I wouldn't have if I were purchasing a bunch of goods.

I get more bah-humbuggy every year, mainly because the season starts so early now. This year, there were Christmas cards in the local grocery before Halloween. I heard my first Christmas carols in mid-November. Takes the fun out of it for me.

This year, the Larva and I are sort of skipping out on the actual day and taking a trip together. We're spending a week in NYC and Washington DC, just the two of us, with a one-day side trip to see my brother and his family. The Larva's present this year is helping me plan the trip, which sounds like it might be duller than the iPod most teens might want, but she is excited because that means she gets to choose several of the things we do while we're there. So it seems I'm going to make a fool of myself ice-skating at Rockefeller Center, but it sure beats hitting the mall. ;)

Good heavens, is the Larva really a teenager? Wasn't she eight like five minutes ago? The trip sounds like oodles of fun -- just make sure you remember which day is Christmas when plotting out your itinerary. There have been a few times when I completely forgot about a holiday while traveling, and couldn't figure out why nothing was open (more likely to be a problem when traveling in Catholic countries on obscure Catholic holidays, but I've had it happen a couple times on major American holidays, too).

Yes, she's 13 and it did happen overnight. Lovely and sweet, with a touch of evil and cranky, as it should be.

We'll be back before the actual day, but you're right about traveling on holidays. Which is why we booked before most schools let out in what is sure to be a vain effort to avoid the mad rush.
