That's the kind of thing I'd like to pick up and turn around a few times. My initial thought (boring as it may be) is that it's part of a door hinge or front gate.
At first glance, I'd guess it might be a sort of hitching post. What was it near? Water? Grazing? Building? Did that rock ledge above it look like it might have been burned in? Could be a spit or some sort of camp cooking device.

Nik found it outside the cottage by the wall at 3 o'clock from the door (also the farthest wall from the door). It's where I would expect a firplace to have been, though I didn't notice any evidence of one. It was right next to the wall, and Nik had to pull a bit to dislodge it from the dirt. It was on the opposite side of the cottage from the stream. My first guess was hitching post, too, though I haven't found any images of hitching posts that look anything like that.
