Gesturegate? They're calling it "Gesturegate"?!

The worst part is, I knew what he was referring to before reading Eugene's post. *sigh* It always vaguely surprises me when I encounter a reference to the Watergate, and they're actually just talking about the hotel.

Anyhoo, the Herald is alleging that in addition to the "obscene" gesture (which was not obscene, and is just a gesture of derisivie ( Read more... )

actually, all the stories I have seen doesn't indicate he said the word, just that he did the gesture. Which is veyr well documented.

My friend Alexa, who is of Italian descent, taught me that very same word and gesture as an excellent way to get yourself beaten up by another Italian, very quickly. She said it was extremely obscene, and certainly her translation was. And she *always* said it with the gesture - to her, they were inseperable. But she has a thing for obscenity, and is very unlikely to get beaten up by anyone. :)

But I note this only in relation to the gesture itself. I don't really care if members of the Supreme Court tell reporters to...um...sod off, either. It lacks a certain gravitas, but as you say, so does the public badgering of elderly jurists.

This is me. I evidently didn't sign in the first time.

Also, I got a shipment of Adagio. I like everything I've tried immensely. Next time you are over, I will share any of them you're interested in.

So how out of it am I? This is the first I've heard of anything.
I can't picture the gesture...so I can make no personal judgement of the facts as they are presented. :(

Hold a hand open under the chin, and wave, with the palm facing you. It's not a polite gesture, but absent the offensive word, it's not crude.

And you're not horribly out of it for not knowing. Just means you're not a SCOTUS groupie. It was all over WBUR, the local NPR station, but I imagine that's because it happened in Boston.
