Between the animal shelter's rummage sale on Saturday, and the Jewish Food Festival on Sunday, I had a very fun and busy weekend. The rummage sale was held waaaay too early on Saturday morning at a local church. Only such a good cause could've gotten me out of bed so early on my day off! I mostly did retail work (straightening, making change) while the sale was going on, and helped break down all the displays and load unsold stuff onto the truck afterwards. It was hard work, but at least the sale was inside and air-conditioned (I was told this hasn't always been the case in previous years). There was a lot of stuff leftover after the sale, but a ton more stuff got bought -- and all together, it raised over $5000 for the animal shelter! I bought two books, a copy of Anne Frank's diary and
Women in the Old Testament, to donate to the temple library in my hometown. Sara and I are thinking about going back there for the Memorial Day weekend.
So after working that, it was nice to not work the Jewish Food Festival the next day. All I did was show up hungry and eat! (Which made me feel kinda bad, when every other Jewish person I saw there was working a booth and/or cooking.) I spent way too much money on matzoh-ball soup, kugel, chocolate matzoh bread, mendel brot, macaroons, and enough latkes and applesauce to last me until Hanukkah! I'd never had macaroons before, and they were so delicious -- the sweetest, fluffiest cookies you could imagine. My managers (who basically run the show) said that this year, attendance was down, but money earned was up. I think that was mostly due to me.
The Jewish Food Festival is a big collaborative effort between the Reform, Conservadox, and Lubavitch shuls here in a town, plus a few from out-of-town. It was really great to see all sorts of different Jews working together. It was so interesting to me to see the Lubavitchers there; even their little boys all had kippot, tzitzit, and forelocks. After the food festival, Sara and I spent the evening at home listening to the tornado sirens going off!!! We've never dealt with tornadoes before (I mean, hurricanes, sure, but never tornadoes) so it was kinda freaky. They were really bad in other parts of the state, but fortunately, we didn't have any damage.
Obviously I don't celebrate Easter, but on Easter Sunday this year, I saw The Ten Commandments on the big screen! I've always loved that movie, and the theater was so practically-empty that it could've been a private showing. (Sara says everybody else watched it on TV for free, and I guess she's right.) I actually brought along my crochet bag and got some crocheting done. I'm soooo close to being finished with my first plarn purse!
