Summary: Genma spends time with Raido and Iruka before he leaves.
Genma slept most of the afternoon so he could be awake when Raido came home. His gear was already packed and waiting by the front door. He had even made dinner that morning while he was making lunch - one less chore to take care of. It wasn't rare for them to spend the night together without Iruka, but Genma was surprised that Iruka's deliberate absence made his time with Raido feel like a real date.
When Raido stepped through the door and handed Genma a purple orchid, Genma growled in annoyance, but knew Raido felt it as well. "What is this crap, Namiashi?"
Raido shrugged as he went into the bedroom, ruffling Genma's hair as he walked by. "Iruka said I had a date with somebody special. The occasion screamed 'flowers'." He laughed when he saw Genma's scowl. "Hey, be grateful. That little blonde tyrant at the flower shop was determined I needed to buy an entire armful of roses!"
Stalking into the kitchen, Genma found a glass that could hold the orchid. He smiled briefly. He always did like purple. "That's it, Raido," he yelled across the apartment. "We're never having one of those talks again. I don't care how much Iruka insists."
"Dude, I'm right here. You don't have to yell," Raido complained, sticking his head around the corner. He pulled Genma closer, kissing him lightly. "I was thinking we could just take it up on the roof with a few beers and see who can slice the most holes in it."
Squeezing Raido tightly, Genma laughed. "Hmmm, token of affection mutilated by target practice. Now that sounds like a date!"
They ate quickly, but decided to take their beer and the orchid across the village to the riverbank. Leaning against a tree, they took turns slicing the flower to shreds until it was too dark to see. Once home, the date progressed much like any other, at least the good ones. Kissing, petting and finally, fucking. Genma didn't hold back and Raido didn't ask him to, even when Genma bit him rather hard on the shoulder. And when Raido lay on his stomach, panting, and Genma pushed off onto his back, panting as well, everything was exactly as it should be.
Except, instead of falling asleep, Genma turned over again, kissing Raido hard.
"What's up?" Raido asked, suspicious.
Genma sighed. "This mission, Raido. It's..."
Raido nodded. "The real deal, this one."
"Yeah."
Raido pulled Genma against him, burying his nose in Genma's hair.
"If..."
"Don't say it, Genma," Raido pleaded. "Just...don't."
"I have to. This time, I have to."
Raido closed his eyes and nodded.
"If...you know..."
"Something."
"Yeah, that," Genma agreed. "If it does, promise me you won't push Iruka away."
"I wouldn't do that to him, Genma."
Genma shook his head, frustrated he couldn't make the words come out right. "Not on purpose. And I don't mean for him. I mean for you. Don't push him away. Let him...be there. He's good at that." Genma sighed again, his voice thick. "But if you don't let him, I don't know if he'll know he has to push."
Raido was silent. He knew what Genma was asking, and they both knew why. Raido was too good at walling himself off. He'd done it after his accident, when he'd convinced himself he was going to die. How angry he'd been when he didn't, and angrier still that no mater what he did or said, Genma wouldn't leave him alone.
"I'll try," Raido said faintly, and Genma let out the breath he'd been holding.
"Thanks, Rai. I...that's all I needed to hear." Genma felt calm now, all the restlessness he'd attributed to nerves disappearing in a heartbeat.
Just before they fell asleep, splayed out across the bed, hands barely touching, Genma heard a soft whisper.
"gadunkadunk."
He smiled, relaxing deeper into the bed. Trust Iruka to find the right words, even if they didn't know they needed them.
"gadunkadunk," he whispered back.
---
Genma woke at 2am, trying to slip away without disturbing Raido. Raido wasn't having any of it, and pulled Genma back.
"Kiss," he muttered, so Genma kissed him.
"Happy now?" Genma grinned, but Raido had already fallen back to sleep.
Showering quickly, Genma pulled on his uniform and rechecked his gear. A week, he thought. Maybe more, but probably not. If things went well, a week. If not, he doubted he would make it back at all. It didn't bother him, not after he'd talked to Raido. He looked into the bedroom, watching Raido sleep for a few minutes before he left, walking down the street. Sure, he could use the rooftops, but why waste the energy?
---
Iruka woke when he heard the noise on his roof, then relaxed. He lifted onto his arms, looking out the window and smiled when he saw Genma looking back.
"Are you coming in?" he asked, laughing because Genma was just hanging there.
"Shoes."
"Genma, I have a broom," Iruka snorted, and Genma chuckled because it was so ingrained, no shoes inside, he figured Iruka wouldn't budge on that.
So Genma stepped in, leaving his shoes on the floor by the side of the bed.
"You have everything?"
Genma grinned and nodded. "I'll do one last check before I leave. Third time." He pushed Iruka back against the bed, plucking at the pajamas. "Off," he whispered, hands already working the buttons of the shirt.
They didn't really have time, not for this, but seeing Iruka there, in those stupid pajamas, his eyes sleepy and hair rumpled, it reminded Genma of when he'd come home with Aoba after the fight. But this time Iruka wasn't mad, and welcomed him openly.
Genma tossed his vest aside, but that was it. There were just too many layers underneath. Instead, he concentrated on Iruka, hands and mouth moving quickly over newly-bared skin. He was careful of his clothes, but he had Iruka squirming quickly, legs spread across the tiny bed that conjured up all sorts of interesting possibilities. Shoving those particular fantasies aside for later, Genma brought Iruka to the brink of release before backing off, just so he could do it again, drawing it out as long as he could, watching carefully with Iruka's legs wrapped around his shoulders.
They both heard the thumps on the roof as Genma was pulling his vest back on, Iruka still trying to catch his breath. Five thumps, and Genma saw Iruka's eyes narrow briefly. But then Iruka smiled, pulling Genma down for another kiss.
"Make them wish they'd never met a shinobi of the Leaf," he whispered fiercely, his eyes glittering in the dark.
Genma kissed Iruka again, uncaring that there were men above them, waiting impatiently. "They'll never even know we were there," he whispered back, deciding this was the best way possible to start a mission.
Iruka smiled when he heard the men leave, and feel back to sleep. Either Genma would be fine, or he wouldn't. Iruka would worry later, when he was sure Genma was far away.
