Sotomayor says there will be no "inappropriate" rulings

Jun 02, 2009 20:16

This is pretty much what I was expecting/hoping she would say.
Sotomayor, who would be the high court's first Hispanic and its third woman, told senators she would follow the law as a judge without letting her life experiences inappropriately influence her decisions ( Read more... )

obama administration, sonia sotomayor, supreme court

The Republicans should back off a bit on her. It's not like she's replacing a conservative justice.

A) I can't tell you comforted I am by that because... well... I'm not. I'm not comforted by that at all.

B) "Closed door session". So Leahy walks out and paraphrases what he thinks he heard, and that type of hearsay is what the public has to go on? Hearsay isn't allowed in a criminal court. Oh, wait. We're looking to approve a NEW kind of Justice...

There's an OLD kind of justice that's about to rain fire and shit down on all of these people. Buy an umbrella, people.

If you could take her at her word, there might be some sense of reassurance about that...yet I can think of absolutely no reason why we would think we *could* take her at her word. Liberal idealogues will say anything or do anything to advance their agenda and seize more power. Anything.

We should examine her career and history in a fair manner ( ... )

I don't expect I'll be agreeing with her opinions very often.

Unless something worse than what has already surfaced appears Republicans need to keep their powder dry. Trying to force Sotomayor out is only going to weaken their position for the next appointee who could be far worse than Sotomayor.

It could be a lot worse...and probably will be if Franken manages to successfully steal the Minnesota Senate seat from Coleman.

Frankly, nothing WILL block her nomination. But the GOP STILL has to fight it, or else give up the idea of ever being a party that can stand up to the opposition of the Dems and the MSM. Ideally, I'd like to see a straight party-line confirmation vote with a couple of moderate stragglers (i.e. Snowe and Collins. And Chuck Hagel. And, probably, Lindsay Grahamnesty and John McLame), a la Clarence Thomas.
