Obama running away with Virginia, Huckabee and McCain neck and neck

Feb 12, 2008 20:13

Wow, Barack Obama is starting to really pull away from Hillary! He has already been declared the winner there and his margin is impressive. In a move that demonstrates just how clear the victory is, Hillary has already moved on to Texas, which doesn't vote until March 4th ( Read more... )

I'm a bit confused. Isn't the conventional wisdom to appeal to the base before the convention, get them on your side first and then move to the center after you have the nomination? This is a mess. Sure, in the end, conservatives only real option will be McCain (not withstanding a hand full of protest votes), but he will be going forward without an energized base. bad... bad...bad.

Indeed it is. I think John McCain has a different idea of what "conservative" means and he has no intention of courting those with whom he has disagreed with over the years. His attitude seems to be a lot like Bob Dole's was in 1996: "I'm the nominee, get in line behind me and behave."

I think we all remember how well that worked out. :P

I was tempted to vote for Thompson but I sighed heavily and drew the line for McCain.
If our little corner of the world was any indication, the Democrats were outnumbering the Republicans 2 to 1. Just not a lot of enthusiasm on the Republican side.
Tons with the Democrats.
As they used to say in drama class, energy levels were down.
Energy levels need to be up. I hope he can pull it off. I like national security.

I'd be game for a McCain-Thompson ticket at this point. Thompson would be a solid conservative who could carry the South (without freaking out the anti-evangelicals like Huckabee would).

I agree that Thompson would do rather well. But it would be tough going for them against Mr. RockStar though I think they'd have it made vs. She-who-Leans-on-He-Who-Betrayed-Her-and-Still-Can't Keep-It-Buttoned. And has very curious Chinese connections.
This lingering image would invite me to vote for ANYBODY rather than Hil:

The Republicans had an uphill battle before the race began, given how the left has wanted the White House back since Bush "stole" it from Gore in 2000. Now that it appears that the ObaMessiah is going to win his side, it really wouldn't matter who runs for the elephants. It looks like this election's going to be won more style than substance, and then the American public gets to learn how much "change" and "hope" will cost.
