SECGEN of the UN I could live with. He'd be there a couple of years, then he'd be out.

It's the rumor that she'd like to make him Chief Justice of the Supreme Court that gives me the willies.

You can't avoid the basic problem with the UN: we act as though it is something that it isn't, and we continue to get frustrated when it doesn't do the things we would like.

We think it is an international deliberative body designed to solve world problems.

It really is a proxy set up by the Allied winners of WW2 in an effort to ensure that Germany doesn't start WW3 sometime in the 1960s. (After all, in 1945, this was a very reasonable expectation given German behavior over previous decades.)

One of the key assumptions in creating the UN was that the Allied powers would continue to work together as allies. Sadly, FDR never envisioned the Cold War. He probably never even heard of Mao Tse-Tung, let alone thought that his rag-tag guerrillaband would actually boot out the Nationalists.

I've said it before, I'll say it again: The world does need an international deliberative body to solve disputes, negotiate certain treaties, and solve some problems. But the UN as designed...isn't it.

It doesn't surprise me whatsoever.

I'm wondering what it'll take for the US to 1) get out of the UN and 2) push the UN out of US territory.

What next? Will the UN demand that criminals be allowed to serve on their own juries during a trial?

Don't give them (or liberals, for that matter) any ideas.
