What isn't LJ doing right?

MySpace is the AOL of these new Web 2.0 hybrid blog/photo sharing/community/time waster sites so of course they're going to have millions of people. They also attract a lot of bad stuff too: sexual predators, gang members, prostitutes and porn website spam, etc.

LJ can be taken more seriously because it is not geared toward the Britney Spears-grade of individual out there. I'd be willing to be the average LJ user had/has a better GPA in grade school/college, and generally read more in general.

I don't' necessarily look at a mild loss in subscriptions as an indiciation alone that Six Apart is handling the site poorly.

I'm not necessarily refuting that concept--I just want to know more about what they aren't doing right that they could be doing.

The posting activity has declined by half since 2004. That's not a great way to entice advertisers to the site.

And advertisements is one of the reasons posting activity has slowed. SA/LJ has consistently and continually lied to the user base about future activities, shot itself in the foot with random and arbitrary account suspensions and basically told everyone who has paid for an account they are suckers.

That is not doing anything right.

Don't forget that Six Apart itself went on National TV [Good Morning America I think] and the owners proclaimed LJ as a site primarily consisting of and for "pre-teens and teens" and while they do make up a large part of the base, is not what the site was about.

No kidding! The median age might be 17.X but that means that half the users are not "pre-teens" or under the age of 18.

And I don't think it is "pre-teens" and "teens" using credit cards to buy accounts, either.

Workplace filters partly responsible? grassyneal September 27 2007, 17:10:36 UTC
I wonder how other Web 2.0 sites have been affected by workplaces shutting off access to them because they were regarded as non-productive.

Interesting question. I would be nice if they had a time of day breakdown.
