Why did the bridge go for almost two decades without significant repair?

What was so important in Minnesota that one of its busiest and at-risk spans went for almost two decades without being replaced or repaired to the point where it was safe?
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Minnesota officials were warned as early as 1990 that the bridge that plummeted into the Mississippi River was "structurally deficient," yet they relied on a ( Read more... )

Well, plus, the Centerville Hooters closed down. What's up with THAT? It wasn't open when I left, and now it's gone. See? You can't go home again.

WTF? It was open a couple of weeks ago when I took my daughter...past it on the way to Big Lots. :D

She made a comment about how the women dressed and asked why they did that. o_O

Did you hear that Centerville annexed part of Sugarcreek Township? It's that huge area next to Rollandia plus the businesses that set up along 675.

The Empire is taking form....

Why don't you wait until we know what caused the bridge to fall before you start complaining about what we should have done?

Because letting a bridge like that go 17 years in that condition is unacceptable no matter what the reason is for its eventual collapse.

We've got 40,000 bridges in that condition and one of them falls...and you act like someone screwed up?

The fact is, people build bridges and bridges fall. Planes fall out of the sky sometimes.

Nothing's perfect. Get over it. Stop jumping up and down and pointing fingers, demanding that something be done, when you don't even know what needs to be done!

lol

I'm asking what wasn't done, not demanding that something be done. It's a bit too late for that.

Meanwhile, the city of Minneapolis has routinely budgeted a scant $200,000 for "major bridge repairs" year after year, while budgeting upwards of $6 million for sidewalks.

Oddly enough, other bridges and other parts of I-35 received more funding.

I guess the bridge just didn't have the right constituents.
