The right response would be akin to what the GOP said in 1904 when it believed one Ion Perdicaris had been kidnapped in Morocco -- by bridands led by Mulai Ahmed er Raisuli. The US perception was that Morocco's government was not doing what it could to set matters right:

"This government wants Perdicaris alive or Raisuli dead."

72 hours. Every last limey returned safe and unharmed. Otherwise, war.

Given that I will be in it in a year, I wouldn't want Iran to do something like this to Americans.

But at least then they'd get what they deserved from our retaliation. I dunno if the UK is up to it.
