Affirmative action has been effed up for years; I really don't see any reason to continue it. Better support for minorities at a lower level (elementary ESL programs, afterschool tutoring, family workshops) would work better than finding out the statistics of those attending college. They won't go to college if they can't pass high school!
Sadly, in some places, they've begun a bit of 'affirmative action' for men, since women are out-applying (and out scoring) for entrance to colleges, but colleges are afraid to be labeled 'female' institutions, so they limit the number of women. :(
That's what I disliked about the numbers game. Better to focus on whether they were disadvantaged for non-gender and color-blind reasons such as poverty.
If we're going to insist on such programs, shouldn't we basing it on income, instead of race? You can't tell me that Bill Cosby's kids are more needing of the help than the son of a white welfare mother.
It was created to prevent racism, but it inself creates racism. My business law teacher said that on paper, it's a good idea, yet in practice, it's bad.
You lose out on the real preformers to employ someone who won't work out.
Only in American can Asians and Caucasians be TOO SMART for affirmative action, and this is only an insult if you include caucasians in the mix. how ironic..
That just reminded me of the politically correct moment when someone (probably in Washington) was trying to describe a black South African without using the word "black" and said "African American South African".
I find this ironic since there are many "majority minority" institutions where Blacks and Hispanics are concerned but none (to my knowledge) where Asians are concerned.
To address such an inconsistency would throw a monkey wrench into the Leftie social justice paradigm.
Is race really a determinant for things like intelligence and success?
