The "Great Compromise" was indeed a return to the pre-civil war status quo. However it was an alliance of "liberal" Republicans and Democrats who forced through this deal over the objections of the "radical" Republicans.

WASPHM? Is there a WASPHR as well? ;)

Bang. Bullseye.

How the Democrats have managed to co-opt the legacy of civil rights despite vehemently opposing them for the first 150 or so years of their party's existence amazes me to no end. And what's even more amazing is that there are thousands of impressionable young students, "taught" by the likes of Jay Bennish, who will believe that load of swill and accept it as fact.

Aw, hell. :-D

I posted that before reading the entirety of the link. Yeah, I'm a sucker. So lemme rephrase that last paragraph of mine...

"How the Democrats have managed to co-opt the legacy of civil rights despite vehemently opposing them for the first 150 or so years of their party's existence amazes me to no end. And what's even more amazing is that there are thousands of impressionable young students, "taught" by the likes of Jay Bennish, who will believe whatever load of revisionist history swill he and his reactionary, closet-anti-Semite ilk throw at them, and accept it as fact."

There. Man, ya had me. Thing is, I've actually read anti-Republican memes that did try to sell the notion that the GOP has always been pro-slavery, so I just assumed... I know what leftists are capable of.
