A very nice clear-headed treatment of the situation. I personally am pro-civil unions, with secular legal rights for any joined couple (ugh, that makes it sound like a medical condition...) and religious marriage under the sole purvue of the various congregations. And I majorly agree with you, everyone's rights must be upheld.

Thanks, I think there is common ground on this issue. Unfortunately the MSM tends to portray only the most extreme positions in order to foster divisions, and thus controversy, which apparently makes for "better ratings".

Excellent evaluation I think. I agree completely about the right of religious organization to hold ceremonies only for those they approve of; anything else would indeed by interference by the government.

Of course, I'm all for having a sweeping statement made by the Supreme Court that banning gay unions is unconstitutional, but I don't think that's very likely. ;) I can't see very many reason why government should sanction 'traditional marriages' ... the government should have a simple civil union recognition, and allow religious folk to perform said unions if they choose to... actually, much like it is now, except without the whole 'no-gays-allowed' bit. :)

Heck, I'm probably having an Elvis-Vegas-Drive-thru wedding... so I don't see the big deal about the 'sacred' nature. Things are as sacred or not as people make them. :D

(the funny thing is that my DAD - uber conservative, Republican, christian - suggested the Vegas Wedding. he thought it sounded like fun! hehehe)

I know some people who did the Vegas wedding thing and one couple who did the "common law" marriage before Ohio made it illegal. Most people I know have had traditional weddings.

Some have lasted and some have not. I think the most important thing is that the two people really love each other.

The libertarian in me say the "State" should stay out of it as much as possible. Not only because government and religion rarely mix well, but also because government tends to mess things up in extravagant ways.
