Supreme Court rules that the First Amendment means what it says!
In a stunning reversal of the nation's federal campaign finance laws, the Supreme Court ruled 5-4 Thursday that as an exercise of free speech, corporations, labor unions and other groups can directly spend on political campaigns.

Which is of course why Bush should have vetoed that stinking mass when it oozed out of Congress!

Agreed, he should have vetoed it.

I seem to recall at the time his reasoning was "No, I don't think it's constitutional, but I'm gonna sign it anyway and let the Supreme Court knock it down." The problem was the expected immediate challenge was a poor one, and SCOTUS did nothing of the sort. So, we've been stuck with it since then.

Bush should have shown some balls, said "This bill stinks," and hit it with the big veto stamp. But IIRC, he never quite figured out how to do that during his administration.
