I have finally finished this unfortunately-named book. Page 16 gives me my proposed title, which really would make a whole lot more sense. Seriously, this is an awful title, no matter what era!
I don't want to spend too much time writing my journal entry on this book, because frankly, this book has already gotten more of my time than it deserves. For example, it hit me that I was only on page 33 and this kid had already killed 2 birds! WTF?!
Keeping in mind that these books were actually intended for kids, one thing that I did like was something that a kid might actually learn from -- that is, that eggs can become birds! We do not yet understand the nature of the unique wireless message by which she learns that within the shell the yolk and the white of her egg have turned into a baby-bird.
There were a LOT of typos in my copy of this book. Other than that, this could have been a short story that explained a little bit about carrier pigeons and their part in wars. Actually, a story about their part in wars might have actually been interesting!
Enough. I'm hoping that the next decade of Newbery Award winners is better.
