Notes: The other day in Applied Linguistics class I was told that vision is processed in the occipital lobe of the brain, which is just in the back of the head, my first thought? That's why Draco went blind when he got hit there! It's been at least a year since I last re-read Draco in Darkness but obviously it made an impression. DiD is one of the classics of H/D fandom and one of the first fics I came to love to bits not so much for the romance as for the friendship. Because the Harry and Draco of old, before Sirius died and Lucius went to Azkaban, became friends more often than they tussled until they got off. Weird, isn't it? But back then it was only a schoolyard enmity and the boys could easily forget their previous misgivings and start the witty repartee. Which was how fanon Draco became the symbol of smoothness, sexiness and the Slytherin brand of cleverness. Anyway, back to Draco in Darkness. A Quidditch accident blinds Draco, who returns to school months before the incident but ceases to relate to people almost completely. Harry, who saw the accident first-hand and feels kind of guilty (without reason, in true Harry fashion) and kind of curious about this new silent Malfoy, takes the first opportunity he can to get close to the other boy. This turns out to be surprising Draco asleep over his textbooks in the library, asleep while the book reads itself in a voice very similar to Binns'. Pleading it helps him study if he reads aloud he offers to read aloud to Draco, who after some banter ends up accepting. Thus commences a friendship that, as everything with Harry and Draco, will soon grow in intensity... The fic is told in third person, alternating between the boys and Draco's perspective is absolutely brilliant, how could a sighted person get it so right? (she explains some of her "practice" in the author notes, I wish someone blind would say something about it because it seems so realistic I just want to know if it is.)
