The experiments were more mind-based than physical in order to study SND. I've written a small bit about it on my TLS forums piece.
DG was made up of a lot of people who didnt want to be there. Injured SOLDIERs, conscripted soldiers or civilians (eg Azul), those punished for different things, test subjects. Bear in mind also that DG grew its own babies (first of which was Rosso).

A motley crew, to be sure. But that still leaves us to muse on precisely how many there were.
