The thing I kept thinking about when I read your post is that that point of view really justified Dorothy Sayers' own treatment of her son. She pawned him off on an aunt, saying she was too busy, not the type to raise a child, etc...She seems, in the biography I read, variously guilty and not guilty about that, but her letters make ME feel guilty: she's constantly putting off seeing him and saying she will later and delaying sending the aunt money, and it seems clear to me, although maybe not to her, that she has no intention of raising the child ever, but the aunt and the child don't know this
