Help needed: we're losing our old readings

Apr 09, 2017 13:21

Hi everybody,

as you perhaps know I'm working at backing up all of our past readings, so the sound files are kept at least. This hasn't been an urgent project before, but with the recent changes of LJ's TOS some people are deleting their journals, and other journals might have been deleted due to inactivity.

So I would like to ask you all for ( Read more... )

backups, announcement, administratrivia, help needed

I've uploaded the missing Road to Isengard and my Hobbit Day reading to the main Tindeck account. Let me know if you need anything else.

The site mine was recorded to has disappeared, I think. It is why I stopped participating.

If you know somewhere where I could record it again I would happily do so.

The site is still there, but the two readings of you I saw so far have, indeed, vanished. Since LJ voice posting stopped working, too, we're looking into other means to record, and it would be totally awesome if you recorded your old parts again, or even joined us for future readings! :D \O/
If you have a smartphone, it should be easy, I think; I've tried the standard app with my android phone as well as a free voice recording app, and both worked well; the sound quality was much better than the voice post recordings. I'm sure there must be similar options for iphones as well.
After recording I could send the file to myself by email, although the file needs converting afterwards. It's possible to have them converted online, although my first find was only a German site. But I'd be happy to convert any sound file into mp3 if necessary.

Though I've not hung out here for a while, my journal is still active. I believe all my readings are stored on box.net, and noticed that someone downloaded a couple of them (including the one Sean did for us!) a couple days ago.

It's good to know someone is saving all these. A tremendous amount of work and love went into creating them.

Great to hear from you! \O/ I've indeed saved a few of your readings, but the older ones are all flocked, so I can't access them. If you agree, I'd like to give you a list with the links when I'm through with all the old readings, so you could see if the readings are still there, or perhaps unlock the entries for me to check, or to find some other solution.
I'm very happy about the readings I could save so far, particularly that of Sean Astin, as indeed so much work and love must have gone into them all, and it would be such a loss to lose any more of them! We (dreamflower02, vaysh and I) don't know yet what changes we might need to make as LJ changes, but we're all three very committed to continue the project until the whole book is read, and to keep it safe.

If you provide me with a list of entries, I'll see if I can give you access to the readings.

Thank you! I'm working at it, but it'll take a bit more as Real Life happened.

I am active on LJ! I do not know about the recent LJ issues - can someone fill me in? Thanks .

Great to hear you're still active! \O/
The recent LJ issues are about the new TOS we all had to sign so we could log in again; it's very difficult and complicated, and I don't know if anybody really understands the possible consequences. It has to do with the migration of the LJ servers to Russia earlier this year, and now the according change to the TOS so we now seem subject to Russian law on LJ. Perhaps somebody else can post a link or two, I fear I don't have any at hand, but will add them when I see something.
As a consequence, many people left LJ, or are now importing their content to DW and might leave LJ, oder delete content from their LJs. Also, the voice post feature is already gone, as it seems, and we fear that also the voice recordings might be gone sooner or later. This is the reason why I'm doing the backups of the recordings with urgency.

Crap, sorry about that. If you could give me the dates I'll go in and open those entries up for you. But I'm not deleting my LJ so I'm a low priority.

Great to hear from you! :D It would be awesome if you could do that! Since I have yet the complete first book to backup, I'd like to take up your offer and do this on a bit lower priority. I'll compile a list of all the links and give it to you then, would that be ok for you?
Thank you so much already!
