This morning on the bus I was thinking about Saiyuki. Probably in honor of the first disc of Reloaded being release on Feb 8th. Some questions have been going through my mind concerning the storyline. Don't worry I won't spoil anything for those who have never seen this series

I don't know if this will help and I don't have sources to direct you to, but Kougaiji is that old. He was imprisoned like his father and mother 500 years previously by Nataku. I don't remember how, but the seal on Kougaiji and his mother wasn't as strong and he got free. I don't know when/where Gyokumen came into it and how much hand she had in sealing his mother.

If you think it's weird that Kougaiji is that old, think of Lirin. She's a result of Gyokumen and Gyumao's coupling which would have happened before he was sealed away by Nataku. Goku's not alone in the age department. That said, I wonder if it's only youkai (demons) who are of a "royal" line that have the extended lifelines. Especially since so many of them are concerned over the rumour that eating a Sanzo will give them eternal life.

As for Nataku's coma, I think he was injured badly after his fight with Gyumao and the one person who could snap him out of it (Goku) was taken away.
