Are They Still Making Talkies?

Dec 07, 2010 01:01

So, Melinda and I didn't go to the movies Friday night. This is not unusual; we've barely gone to the movies at all this year. In previous years, we might have actually sallied forth to assay Warrior's Way (or whatever that cockamamie cowboy ninja think with Geoffrey Rush is) - I mean, hell, we were there for opening night of Snakes On a Plane - ( Read more... )

not going to movies, movies, hey wait is that out already?

You make excellent points, but I for one am very much looking forward to Tron: Legacy.

I'm impressed by the technical achievement. That being said, I read an interview with the director where he was talking about how awesome it was that they could now do curved tracks for the lightcycles. My first thought was "Wait. It was the fact that the lightcycles could only move at right angles that made them cool and different."

Eh. The originals could curve too, once they were off the grid.

Or more to the point, fewer and fewer films that seem like they're interesting enough to supercede, say, an evening chatting with friends in the social calendar.

I think we're farther and farther removed from the core audience for Hollywood as we get older. That or our friends are getting more and more interesting.

Could be both, I guess.

I'm all for more interesting friends :-)

And sure, Hollywood pumped out a lot of formula schlock when we were the coveted 18-24 demographic, but I don't remember it feeling quite so much like frozen dinners, if you take my meaning.

Warrior's Way is out? I haven't been paying as much attention as I used to. I claim current distraction, as well as several of your reasons given above. (That said, there's more than a couple upcoming I am looking forward to, oddly enough.)

sysd and I hit the movie theater maybe three times a year now, and it's always small release films like Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus and The Kids Are All Right. I'm going to push for a babysitter the week True Grit comes out, just cuz Coen Brothers need to be seen on a big screen, and Black Swan if it ever shows near us, but otherwise we wait for Netflix.

The funny thing is, except on rare occasions we don't particularly catch up on films after they've left the theaters, either.

It's a weak year. If next year is weak too, then I shall begin to grow concerned.

The trailer for Green Lantern - add some Iron Man! Add some Batman! - does not give me hope.
