I discovered tonight, quite by accident, that my copy of the 1954 hardback edition of Tar Heel Ghosts, by James Harden, is in fact signed by the author.
I find this oddly cool, not least because I picked up the book after a wild goose chase into the hinterlands of suburban Wilmington with Badger, Merrie and Melinda after my signing at Two Sisters

My well-loved, unabridged copy of The Count of Monte Cristo published by Penguin Classics departed my company in the hands of an eager 9th grader several years ago. She still has it, incidentally. However, I wanted to teach that novel--all of it--to this year's crop of freshmen. Thus, I went looking in used book stores and online to find that same edition.
I found several unabridged copies, and just when I thought I'd discovered what I was looking for, Amazon wrote me back to say that the copy was no longer available. I tried again, but with little success. A friend of mine and I happened to be discussing good novels for teenagers, and I brought up The Count and my search for another copy. Weeks passed until yesterday, quite unexpectedly, I got a package in the mail with a Royal Mail sticker on it. Wondering what could possibly be inside, I opened it to find not one, but TWO, unabridged copies of The Count, both just as well-loved as my old copy was. I've taken to buying every copy of Silverlock I can find, simply because I lend it out so often and so many of those copies go a-wandering...
