Open Question: Best Fantasy to suggest for post-Rowling readers

Steven Levitt recently finished all the Harry Potters and found he didn't like The Golden Compass. A deluge of suggestions, most being "suck it up and read more of Golden Compass." I think this is either the wrong approach or the wrong series to suggest. I know a few people were suggested Robert Jordan, but I think only Terry and Amber stuck with ( Read more... )

My dad enjoyed the Elvenbane books by Andre Norton and Mercedes Lackey, but he never read any of their other stuff. (I never liked Mercedes Lackey much anyway.) Also, I don't think he's read Harry Potter. Still, they're not brilliant or anything but they're decent so you could try those.

Neil Gaiman is a completely different type of fantasy. I usually try Neverwhere before American Gods with people not used to the darker aspects of reading.

Ooh!Ooh! The Harry Dresden books by Jim Butcher! There are about ten of them out now and despite a predictable tendancy to beat up the main character, they are quite good.

Everything else I've read post-Potter has been girl related: The Twighlight Series, Patricia Briggs, and Kim Harrison.

Old Clive Cussler is pretty good, things like Inca Gold and Sahara are fun if he likes a more militaristic bent, and then he could try the Honor Harrington books too.
