So many women are screwed over by canon. So so so so many I'm surprised it's not a trope by now ... unless it is ...
Off the top of my head there's: Eve (The Bible), Veronica Mars, Every woman on Supernatural, and every character on Heroes
Joss Whedon's: Cordelia Chase, Winifred Burkle, Priya "Sierra" Tsetsang, Kendra Young, Sineya etc. etc.

Word to everything you said! Although she was screwed over by the writers one of the reasons I was drawn to her was because she had a lot of inner strength, to go through what she endured but still keep her head up.
My post finale canon is that she's with Micha, helping him hide/protect special people that are now exposed. The Company would soon get involved...

Yes! Even in the third series/season in all it's recton mess she had so much strength. They also let her keep her emotion even though they took away much of her reasons for being emotional (i.e. her brother and the history she had with Gabriel/Sylar). She still got angry and cried when Mohinder hurt her. And she left with some dignity.
I was watching Youtube and I saw this woman filming her little dog and it made me think of Maya having a little dog to play with while she was preggers and in her final trimester ...
why, yes, I'm a dork.
