I hope it's not the only way. Just more tolerance and for the producers etc to actually realise that their target audience, which has to be as wide as possible to get the $, isn’t going to run away because it has POC in it. When I was doing film studies I'm sure I read that POC make up for a high % of theatre goers in the US. There’s still a lot of latent racism in Hollywood for sure.
Everything in that article is so true. And it's funny you posted that today because just this morning my mom was telling me how she was pissed about that movie the Soloist, Robert Downey Jr. is playing a hispanic guy, and you know the only reason is for big name recognition.
It's like Scarface, a movie that is so well known and idolized and yet all the main Cuban characters are played by white Italians.
Slowly though, I think more and more progress is being made. At least hispanic actors and actresses now don't have to change their name or constantly color their hair like poor Rita Hayworth.
I remember the first time I saw the movie "Gahndi" I was horrified that the main role was played by a white man. Especially when India has such a thriving movie business! Which really means there's no excuse.
I have friends who have been following the Avatar project who were upset because they hired all white kids for it. It's ridiculous. And I mean, especially in a kids movie. What kind of message is that sending for children?
Still, this article really opened my eyes to what a rampant problem this is, even more than I was already aware of. :/
