Author’s Notes: # 14 prompt from my un_love_you table. Following Trail of Tears

She talks in her sleep. I sit and listen to her words, they sound so familiar.

Our captors ask me about her. Her ability, what she can't. I know some, but I don't tell them anything. I need more time. Time with her. Time to figure her out. She reminds of a time and I tell her about it when she's asleep. When they drug her, and she sleeps, I tell her about a man I met in a faraway land ...

~

Once upon a time, I met a man, a special man. A healer; in my travels. I came to him and he knew me even though this had been our only time meeting.

I've learned and remembered, his language. He spoke like you, not just the same language, but the dialect was similar, they way he spoke was almost exactly like the way you do.

He was a healer and he used his power to heal the people around him. But only some ailments. Only some sicknesses. He couldn't mend bones or close up wounds like other healers can, but he took away the sickness, by taking it inside of himself.

I went to see him. To learn if it were true. He was kind... to the others. Something inside of me put him off and he said 'You've come to be healed.' It was not a question.

"There's nothing wrong with me." I told him.

'You have a deep sickness that I can not cure. It is here.' he said, as he put his fingers to his temple.

My jaw set, I was finished listening to him. I hadn't come for his help. I came for power ... his power. And I told him 'You cannot cure, because you do not have the will to. You pick and choose like a demi-god.'

'I heal those who want to be healed. Those who need it and your sickness it beyond me.'

He talked until he couldn't.

'You will never have the other part of me.' He kept saying it like it was supposed to mean something.

'I just came for your power. I could care less about anything else you may consider of value.'

'This does not end with me.'

'Actually, it does.'

And I left him there, dead on the ground where he made his home. It was strange. He barely put up a fight. It was like he knew something I did not. And I didn't like that 'not knowing'; there was a smugness in it. Granted I could have been a little nicer about the way I put him down, but I did it quickly. Made it so he couldn't scream.

I don't know why I tell her these things. She draws them out of me.

The guards come back into the room. Our captors ask me about her.

'Nothing new to report', I lie. Or maybe it is the truth, I know all that I know, and 'there is nothing new under the sun'.

'I'll need more time.' Which is the truth. We all need more time.

They lead me out of her cage and I allow myself some fresh hope. I know it is dangerous, but if there's a chance ...

Another chance in this girl, with this girl. 'This does not end with me.' It sounds like a warning echoing against the walls of my skull. I push it away, because it can be a start with her ... a new star with us. Maybe he knew it all along. Maybe that was his knowing. Maybe she was meant for me ...

And maybe I should't have killed him ...

Maybe ... not.

She speaks of fate. Destiny.

Destina ... and she could be mine.

A new start beyond these walls.
