I recently joined a public library (for the first time in my life oddly enough). First book I borrowed was Bruce Sterling's The Artificial Kid. I imagine I should have picked something more momentous but hey. Keyboards have micro-controllers that translate key strokes into binary signals. So, it's not that far of a stretch to assume that one could Van Eck a computer cable wih sensitive enough hardware...

Also, think about the motes from A Deepness In The Sky, with enough active surveiling you could maybe use radar or sonar to map out, in 3D, which keys were pressed.
