Sounds a lot like A.E. Van Vogt's world to me. A friend loaned me a book of his short stories, they seem to have aged incredibly well for being almost 60-70 years old. I think it's because the tropes are more mental and physiological in nature (ie; his heroes that are free of Aristotelian thinking and can teleport and do all sorts of mentat shit)
