Writing-wank is so much easier than writing, isn't it.

I'm trying to come up with a nice monosyllabic verb for extramundane sensory perception. Note, this is not ESP because, logically, there is no such thing. If you are perceiving something, you are doing so with a sense. The fact that that sense isn't one of the default five is irrelevant. Okay ( Read more... )

Nice double-word-that-isn't-entendre-since-this-isn't-about-sex.

To address one of your meanings, "preview" doesn't quite work since Our HeroTM isn't a precog, he's more like a black fully-human Herb (from Ranma 1/2 in terms of power and skill. He can sense - or rather, glom the ninja lurking outside his window because, like all biological lifeforms including bacteria, they have chi auras/signatures. "Link" is more telepathy-oriented, I think. I considered "Scan" but like "ping", it seemed too technological.

On the other front, I'm embarassed to say, after all these years, I have less than 30,000 words of actual story. The rest is just fucktons of notes and research.

*looks it up*

I'm surprised they made a special ability/technique out of that; you'd think a decent ninja would be able to do most of that at will. My idea of a chi-sense covers the 360-degree, the perceive-through-solid-matter, the see-chakra without the blindspot. Once you've mastered it, you can no longer switch it off; of course, by then you wouldn't want to anyway. Evading it would require the target to (a) be able to mute their aura/chakra till it blends in with the background (b) get out of sensory range (c) make their chi look/seem/radiate like someone else's (d)any combination thereof.

Forgive me, I'm thinking this through as I type, hence my comment getting so long in the tooth.
