Sayaka has a best friend.
At least, that’s what Sayaka thinks Hitomi is. They were friends since elementary school, and now they walk together to middle school. They are even in the same class!
But Hitomi is refined and does well in school. She goes for many classes to improve herself, and when Sayaka asks Hitomi out to play after school Hitomi often has to say no.
Sayaka sometimes wishes that she had another best friend. Someone who would hang out with her after school, someone who would make loud jokes with Sayaka just to make Hitomi smile, someone kind and gentle -
But Sayaka feels so guilty for thinking these thoughts when she already has Hitomi for a best friend. So she ignores them, and doesn’t wonder why she keeps thinking she has another best friend.
Sayaka is in love with Kyousuke.
So when Kyuubey approaches her with the chance for a wish, the decision is easy. She chooses to heal Kyousuke’s hand. It doesn’t matter that she could fade away if she uses too much of her magic. As long as he can play the violin that he loves so dearly, Sayaka is fine.
Now when Hitomi says no to playing after school, it’s fine. Sayaka has magic girl duties with Mami-sempai. Her life is busy and full, and she’s ok with just having one best friend.
Hitomi likes Kyousuke’s music just as much as Sayaka does. It is one of the reasons why they are friends. So if Sayaka was honest with herself, she would have known this would happen.
“I’ve loved Kyousuke for a long time,” Hitomi tells Sayaka.
Sayaka just has to make a joke, but inside she is sick to her stomach. Of course Hitomi would like Kyousuke as much as Sayaka does. If Sayaka fell in love with Kyousuke and his music, why wouldn’t Hitomi?
She feels even worse whe Hitomi gives her a day to confess. Kyousuke deserves someone like Hitomi, who would love him and be able to spend the rest of her life with him. He doesn’t deserve someone like Sayaka, who has to fight wraiths and could disappear at any time.
Filled with confusion, Sayaka runs away.
Despite her confusion, Sayaka knows that she has a duty to fight demons, and that she cares for Kyousuke.
So when wraiths attack the concert hall where Kyousuke is to audition, Sayaka doesn’t hestitate. She immediately goes to fight the wraiths, ignoring Mami’s calls for Sayaka to wait for her.
She should have listened to her sempai. Even when Mami, and Homura, and Kyouko all come to help Sayaka, there are too many wraiths. At the end of it, Sayaka uses up all her magic, and her Soul Gem goes completely dark.
She thought that was all there was to it.
At the moment that Sayaka’s soul gems darkens completely, a magic girl appears in front of her. She is glowing and kind of see-through and utterly, terrifyingly familiar.
Sayaka stares at her until she remembers everything.
She wants to call out her name.
She wants to hug her tightly and never let go.
She wants her to go over each and every memory, and laugh about them together.
Instead, Sayaka ends up yelling at Madoka, “How could do you that?” She grabs Madoka to… hug her or shake her, she doesn’t know, so she ends up just gripping her shoulders. “You made such a wish… without even consulting me… !”
Madoka, the best friend Sayaka forgot, just says, “I’m sorry, Sayaka-chan.” She touches Sayaka’s cheek -
And they’re in the concert hall where Kyousuke is performing. Madoka is in her school uniform again, of all things. So is Sayaka. It’s almost like old times… or does it still count as old times, if it never happened?
“I wanted to talk to you about my wish,” said Madoka. “But then I realised that I had to talk to you about your wish.”
Sayaka might not be smart at books, but she can figure things out. She looks at Kyousuke’s hands, and it’s like making her wish all over again. The choices are overwhelming.
But the answer comes to her, like it comes to every Sayaka in every universe. She’ll make the same wish, for Kyousuke, every time. She’ll accept fading away if she has to.
Besides, after fading away, she has a best friend to catch up with. A best friend who would also make the same wish, for hope, every time.
