The pigs might have been kept to eat rubbish thrown into the streets - during the war, for example, waste food was used to feed pigs - which would also account for why their meat wasn't eaten. Also I believe pork goes off quite quickly in a hot climate - but given today's refrigeration, why maintain the 'no pork' dietary law? The reason for it isn't there.

As for washing machines? They have a mind of their own..

Have you experimented with turning the knickers inside out before washing, to see if they emerge right way round?
