Oh Wow, this is just amazing and it's only the first chapter! I can't wait to see what else you've planned for your lucky readers. This is just so lush and thick and layered, and Jayne hasn't even shown up yet! Can't wait for more. Love you Greenowl!!! :)Ali

I'm so glad you like it. And thanks for the vote of confidence in the absence of Jayne - need to get the scene set and explain all that's going down in the next five parts.

Love you more!!!

:D

I adore this already. So much cultural detail. Beautiful. I take it from her age (and other assorted cues) that this is an AU.

Quite looking forward to your next.

Yes, it's AU (I revised the Summary to include that pertinent info). I knew when I started researching that to keep this from turning into "creepy-old-man-meets-Space-Lolita" I'd have to make River and Jayne closer in age. But I kept his original parents from the Photuris series.

Thank you so much for the feedback! Bet I'm anticipating Alantris and The Reinvention of River Tam more than you're looking forward to this, though...

Brilliantly written :D I love all the little AU details - like Gabriel being Inara's brother - and I can't wait to read more :D

Many thanks! greenowl January 16 2008, 03:57:26 UTC
I thought, with Eric Bana playing Gabriel Tam in my 'verse, why not have his character related to Inara? Those high cheekbones, that olive skin, that dark coloring, those impossibly square jaws...

Thanks for the comments on the details it's the little details that make it easy to swallow the AU.

I promise that it will only get better. But be warned, romanceguru specifically requested "ache", so it's going to be a three-hanky job if I get it right.

I was wondering if this was still in the works! *bounces*

Your sane River is delicious. I think you’ve done a great job at keeping pre-academy River individual instead of turning her Mary Sue.

I love the all the little details you’ve managed without getting too wordy. *admires* The back story you’ve created is very rich and I think this River is going to contrast nicely with the world she’s thrust into.

Took awhile to jumpstart, I'll admit... greenowl January 16 2008, 04:03:50 UTC
The plot bunny was mighty skittish, let me tell you. I had to find just the right angle to approach it from, lest it turn on me and go bitchcakes, give me both middle fingers waaay up and scurry off to someone else's vegetable garden to munch.

Thank you, that is a high compliment regarding the way River's letting me write her! I remembered that Simon said his sister could be a brat so I am determined that she be fully human - foibles, faults, freakish notions that make you want to stmop your foot and go to your room rather than deal with her...you know, the stuff that makes her interesting.

And, oh, how our girl's going to get some culture shock! Wuhahahaha!

Thank you for your patience, ma'am. I swear on my sweet fluffy Lady that it will be well worth the wait!

Awesome! I’m looking forward to that. I love it when my characters have to stretch and grow.

Lucky for us River's so "bendy" and all...

Am I going to Special Hell for saying that?

*meep*
