An unbelievable opportunity

Part I: Forever and always

Watching everyone that approached her, Artemis judged their intent. This was his lady to protect, and he was not going to let anyone hurt her. Not that Minako needed much protection, she was quite capable of handling anything, but it never hurt to stay on guard. And today he felt that something was going to happen.

Minako glanced over her shoulder. Artemis, in human form, walked quietly near her. She could feel him watching the pedestrians and knew that he was on guard for the paparazzi. 'He stands out more than I do. That long white hair and blue eyes. At least he is wearing normal cloths. If he was in the outfit he was wearing when he first transformed, he would really stand out.' Slipping through the crowd towards the studio door, she wondered what was in store for her today. Ken, her manager, had called and told her about an unbelievable opportunity for her. She had to get there quickly. She was relieved when they made it inside unmolested.

Artemis' shoulders relaxed. She was safe in here. Minako knew how to put the other idols and wannabes in their place. In here he could just watch her, enjoying the way her hair swished over her shoulder or the way she gestured with her hand, recalling the memory of that hair drifting over his shoulders, how her hand felt stroking over him. Fujiyama, Ken's secretary, approached her and something in his stance made Artemis tense up again.

"Miss Aino, this way." Fujiyama gestured towards an open conference room door. Smiling, Minako followed, Artemis was right on her heels.

Ken looked up as they approached. "This is wonderful. I know you are popular, but this is unprecedented. You were asked to preform in a promotional video."

Minako's eyes widened. "When is the audition time? Am I to sing, dance, or act?"

Ken shook his head slightly. "You don't need to audition for the part, they asked for you specifically. And you will be doing all three. It is promotional video, really it is a long commercial, for the new resort that is opening in Okinawa. Are you interested?" The tone of his voice told her that she dare not say no.

"Of course, who are the other actors?"

"Don't worry, they are all top notch, but I was told not to reveal them. They don't want any of their names to leak out until after the shooting has started."

"But why can't I know?"

"Those are their conditions. It will be fine. Would I ever let you act with second class talent?"

Minako's look spoke volumes.

--------

The sun shone down onto the little party that had just flown in from Tokyo. Ken glanced back at the tall man that silently followed Minako about. One day, he was going to get him into acting. Even if he had no talent, his looks would take him far.

"This way." Their guide showed them to a small secluded section of the hotel. "Your rooms will be over here. Go ahead and settle in, I'll come get you when everyone has arrived."

Picking a room, Minako shut the door behind her and slumped against it. Something felt off. She felt the door knob twist against her back. "Artemis, I really want a moment to myself, please."

Artemis gripped the door knob tightly and then released it. "Okay, call if you need me. I'm going to go stroll the grounds." Striding out of the hotel, he went to explore the layout of the area. Part of him was sure that they were going to need to know it later.

Minako sank onto the bed. 'Something is off. There is just something that isn't right about this. Sure, I have some popularity. My album topped the chart, the commercials were great, but... this is too good of an opportunity.' Laying back, she tried to let the calmness of the room settle her nerves.

The knock came fifteen minutes later.

------

"Ah! Here she is now, the newest rising star."

Minako glanced at the short balding man who speaking to a man slightly hidden by a shadow. Ken patted her shoulder, his smile stretching from ear to ear.

The balding man turned towards her. "Miss Aino, welcome. I'm glad that you could join us. I'm sure you are anxious to meet your costar. He is the one who picked you out. I was surprised that he even knew that you existed, as he has been overseas for the last six years." He waved for the man in the shadow to come out. "And here is the reason for all the secrecy.... Ace Kaitou."

Minako felt her heart freeze. 'What is he doing here? Surely he was destroyed all those years ago.' She had seen him fall into pieces as she held his hand.

Ace smirked slightly. "Juo, could you leave us for a few moments. I think she needs to get over her shock." He looked over towards Ken. "You, too. I would like to have a private word with Miss Aino."

Ken glanced at Minako, trying to judge what she wanted him to do. 'Where is Artemis? This is a time that he would really come in handy. He is her body guard. There is something about his look that I don't care for.' Minako stared at the actor, her face blank. "Minako?" She looked over at him and nodded slightly.

"Go ahead, I'll be fine."

Ken wasn't sure she would, her voice was as deadpan as he had ever heard it. 'Maybe this wasn't a good idea after all.' He gently shut the door behind him. Holding the door knob, he was torn about what to do. Should he go hunt for Artemis, who he could send in there without compromising anything, or should he stay near in case she needed him? Trusting in Artemis' sixth sense when it came to Minako, that guy always knew when she was in trouble, he step just far away from the door not to be able to eavesdrop, but close enough to respond if she called for help.

Minako kept her face blank as she tried to determine if the man across from her was still her enemy.

"I see you are still wearing the red ribbon in your hair."

Her hand almost reached up to touch it, but she forced it to stay down by her side. "You were right, it suits me." 'Besides, Artemis likes it. He used to play with it, chase it about the bed when he was stuck in his cat form. Even now, he still plays with it.' "So, what have you been up too? I didn't realize that you were still making films. After the catastrophe in China, I thought that you were gone." She waited, keeping her gaze steady. She was not going to let him know how nervous she was.

"Yes... it was a disaster. Things went horrible wrong." His eyes didn't reflect how wrong, nor did his expression show anything about how he could be there, but have fallen to pieces way back then. "But I kept my foreign fan base, and I want to regain a foot hold here in Japan. So, I will use you, the bright new shining star, to polish my image and raise me back up to stardom here. And, of course, you will become famous across the rest of the world. Nice deal, isn't."

"Yes, it is." 'But your tone leaves me to wonder. Something about it... is off.' She tilted her head, breaking the stiff posture she had been frozen in. "But why me? There are other rising brilliant stars out there."

A slightly sadistic smile cross his face. "I wanted to see how you were doing, Miss Aino. It has been several years."

Minako caught the emphasis on the Miss. If he had shown up six months ago, that dig would have twisted like a knife in her heart. But he didn't, and it wasn't. The blow was deflected by someone who wasn't even in the room.

She smiled at him. "I am doing fine, and yourself? Are you still following the Dark Kingdom's orders?" She watched his reactions, wanting to see if he even remembered all that happened, or if his emphasis was for a different reason.

His brow crashed over his eyes. "You know as well as I do, it is destroyed. Your Moon Princess handled that one."

Shifting slightly, Minako rested her weight on the balls of her feet. She was not going to be caught by a surprise attack from him. "Why did you ask for me, honestly?"

"Two lonely hearts, destiny to love, but for ever one sided, never quite reaching the point of ecstasy of a full love... I thought we could comfort each other as we worked together." His sarcasm was laced heavily with bitterness.

There was something in his tone told her that he was partially telling her the truth. Settling back on her heels, she gave him a slightly sad look. "Adonis... we just were never meant to be. You said it so long ago, and it is still true today." Watching him, she smiled a smile full of the love she felt right then. "There is someone else who holds my heart near instead. I have no comfort to give you."

Hurt and uncertainty flitted across his face to be replaced by a sneer. "That princess is still taking you away. You should have been mine, you were meant to be mine!"

"No wonder you stayed with Beryl... you both thought alike. Her about Endymion, and you about me. But... the wheel has turned, Fates have spun new threads, everything changes."

As she was being impressed that she didn't glitch that last sentence up, she heard the door open behind her.

His eyes narrowed on her. "You say everything changes, but just know, that won't change, Miss Aino. I saw your future in the cards. You are still walking that path."

Artemis stared at an enemy he had never thought to see again. In three steps he cleared the distance between him and Minako. By the third he realized that Minako did not consider the other man a threat. He stopped by her side and waited.

Ace glared at the tall man who had barged into the room. "I said I wanted no intruders. This is a private audience between Miss Aino and myself. Leave."

Artemis didn't move. Minako shook her head slightly. "This audience is over. I will do this promotional video for you, but don't ever ask me to work with you again." She turned on her heel, and looked up at Artemis. Smiling at him slightly, she let him know that she was okay.

Ace watched as she looked up at the unknown man, a gentle warmth radiating from her face. 'No! She can't have found love, she is just acting... that is it.' He stared after her as she headed out the door. 'Her future... I read it. Love was never going to come her way. Never.'

Artemis briefly looked back at Ace, his look clearly warning the other man not to mess with his lady, before following her out the door.

Ace didn't see the look that Artemis cast his way, his eyes were still watching the blonde hair swish gently across a straight back with ever step she took away from him. His view was cut off by a wall of white hair. The lines of the future, the path that he used to easily see for her wavered and snapped. No new ones showed. At that moment he knew all ties with his princess were cut. They were separated by that wall.

-----

Artemis pulled her close, holding her body against his. Their bed creaked as he lifted his head high enough to see her blue eyes. White hair fell and mingled with the blonde spread out across the pillow, making a softly light world, closed off from the outside world. It created one that was just for them. "All doubts erased?"

Minako smiled up at him and trailed her fingers down his chest, stopping where their bodies joined. "Yes. You and I... partners forever."

He dropped a kiss on her nose. "Forever."
