Thoughts on Sybil and Downton Abbey S3

I realize I’m terribly late with this one, though the latest Christmas special hasn’t yet aired on New Zealand television. But I wanted to comment on the circumstances of Sybil’s you-know-what and the season in general.

Spoilers for Downton Abbey S3... )

Jeez, I really love reading your reviews, haha! You always say everything so perfectly and so right. I hate you...

I agree with pretty much everything you said. I know a lot of people who go on and on about how Sybil was their favorite character and that a misogynist writer killed her off. Uh...head scratch right there. Like you said, if the actress wanted to leave, don't curse the writers into a role that they most likely aren't. Sybil wasn't my favorite character either (that role goes to Mary), but I still liked her spunk and enthusiasm for life. And I agree, the Sybil/Branson stuff, though sweet and cute, was often repetitive. I really enjoyed her death episode over all. Very shocking and very emotional, which is what I'm sure the writers probably intended. After all, it's television.

By the way, when you watch Labyrinth, will you be doing a review on that? I have my own thoughts on that, and I'm very curious about your views once you see it.

I'd never call Fellowes misogynistic - as unfortunate as the circumstances of Sybil's death was, the fact that he writes women so, so well makes "misogyny" a rather silly accusation to make. Writing wise, he was clearly boxed in when it came to what to do with Sybil ( ... )
