And I've made up my mind.

There really is no point in having the Office of Culture forums.

Tell me about it. I hate hate HATE that we cannot mention racism. We can do in-depth discussion of every other ism, but we can't even mention that such a thing as racism exists? But I'm actually surprised the feminism thread stayed open as long as it did considering that certain asshole who's present on the boards. I don't know how long you've been active but was there ever a time when people could mention racism? Do you know their rationale for why we can't?

The only thing I know for sure is that discussions on racism was causing so much of a hassle, I think it just got to be too much for the mods to even be able to control.

The thing is, COS is not that great of a place to have these discussion in the first place. They've got all the right rules in place for when discussing canon (e.g. be civil/know this all your opinions), but those rules don't work when trying to have discussion on different isms and social issues. People like Midnightsfire can say the most offensive shit, and still claim "it's just my opinion." We need civil discussions in these conversations, but sometimes ignorant bullshit needs to be called out for what it is. You can't always do that while trying to be all nice as possible or when someone subtlety tries to say "your oppression is all in your head".

It's not just that he's allowed to make openly misogynist comments and remain unscathed, because "all opinions are equally valuable" (which is SUCH bullshit), BUT IN ADDITION we're not allowed to call hi out on it, because apparently THAT's when confrontation starts. So the rules lead to the paradoxical situation where being a gross bigot is protected under the "opinions are sacred" rule, but calling the bigot a bigot is banned under the "don't get personal" rule. These rules need urgent revision. This moron should have been banned from the Office of Culture forever, instead he can freely talk down to us and actually tell us what our beliefs mean and how much they're worth. Cause it's all his opinion. ARGH.

Maybe the best thing we can do is just warn them. There's having very offensive opinions, but being condescending and aggressive is a whole different matter, which I see him doing a lot.

Racism is a banned topic in the Office of Culture forums. That and we got some ignorant people up in the feminism threads saying the dumbest shit.

The only thing I know in regards to banning racism is that the topic became too much to handle for the mods.

They are very aggressive. I really don't see how they can get away with it. And it seems like its only when those of us offended get mad that the mods chime in.

She sounds very defensive to me. Like she has to defend her traditional outlook and lifestyle against those evil feminists who dare suggest women may be happy doing other things. It's either she doesn't feel that confident about her life choice and needs to convince herself she shouldn't be having any regrets, or she's just a misogynist, and that needs no reasons, it's the mainstream course of the world.

Oh boy, I'm so glad I'm not posting over there anymore. (I do skulk around and read what's on the boards, but I've mentally taken a large step back.)
