Well, it seems we have a new "pet". I've just (= 23:45) discovered a very satisfied and sated racoon in my kitchen having eaten the cats' food ;-) My cats have a separated corner where our dog can't reach the food. My dog wasn't so pleased to see it. She almost attacked it and her hunting instincts are infinitesimal.  When I opened the door to our ( Read more... )

Rarely see raccoons here, but have oodles of mice. Try to catch them in humane traps where they tend to show up first, in the laundry room by the basement, but sometimes they don't get the hint that they should be caught there first.

End result? If I'm paying attention, the 4 cats and I have a Mouse Rodeo and it's a race to see who gets to it first. If I'm NOT paying attention, we tend to find things that resemble mice, but not much anymore, lying on the carpet upstairs. Once they left us the back half of a mouse on the dining room carpet one night, and then left us the front half the next night. :-P

Always feels funny to praise them for leaving dead rodents lying around, but I know that's just a cat thing, and THEY think they're leaving us little gifts. :D

Fortunately, I've never found any of their little "gifts" in my bed (kind of surprising, given how many of their other toys I've found in my bed at night), or been surprised by one in my shoe yet. Sure it's just a matter of time, though. Ick.

oh, yes, mice! I know exactely what you mean having 5 cats myself (or rather the cats have me ...) :-) Our house is a very old timber frame construction, and mice just seem to love it to live inbetween the walls ;-) Thank God the mice stay there most of the time. And then we have a fairly big and wild garden ... So I get little gifts and training lessons on how to catch a mouse, too
