Yes, it definitely makes Igraine's death more tragic and unpleasant, but I think it also explains a lot.

Igraine did die during childbirth. In the episode "Excalibur" it is said that the reason Nimueh is blamed is because she was witch for the Pendragon family and, since Igraine was having issues conceiving, Uther called on her for help. But to create life (aka Arthur) Igraine had to die to keep the balance of life and death. This made Uther mad and thus his hatred of magic.

I think how Uther knew is that he was there, probably asked her to save Igraine and Nimueh said she couldn't due to the balance.
