Maybe they want someone who's more malleable and obedient? Since you don't seem to be either of those, maybe that's why they didn't hire you. On another note, if you ever want a job in Hong Kong, my boss is trying to find a native English speaker to be a sub-editor...?

If I could get out to Hong Kong, I'd be delighted to try for that.

As for malleable and obedient, none of my bosses have ever complained of my conduct on the job. Unlike some people, I show up on time, ready to go, and work the whole day through without goofing off.

Part of the problem is that around here, employers are spoilt rotten for choice. It's like how it was when I worked as a clerk-typist in the math department of Iowa State University. For every academic opening, they got 50 or more CVs, and they could be endlessly persnickety. I saw them tossing CVs because someone didn't like the typeface. While I bled inside for those people, I could also see that they had to winnow things out somehow.

I wouldn't be so annoyed if I knew why. Even if it was "we don't like your face," that would tell me that this company is not one I want to work for. I was told once that "we had ten applicants, and they were all equally qualified, so we put their names into a hat and drew one out and yours wasn't it." I had no hard feelings about that at all; that was at least a fair way to deal with the problem.
